GDCh Lunch Talk Electrochemistry #10

Nils Böttcher / Leon Schmidt

BAM / KIT

Nils Böttcher (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), Fachbereich 3.1 Sicherheit von Gefahrgutverpackungen und Batterien) will give a talk titled: "Understanding the explosive thermal runaway behavior of sodium-ion batteries via high-speed synchrotron radiography"

Sodium-ion batteries (SIB), promoted as an inherently safe technology, were proven to show explosive thermal runaway characteristics. Combining high-speed synchrotron radiography and high-precision nail penetration testing, the cause of this unexpected behavior was found in their mechanical components. This underlines that battery safety does not solely depend on optimized cell chemistries or materials but requires a more holistic approach instead.

Leon Schmidt (Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), Institut für Angewandte Materialien – Elektrochemische Technologien (IAM-ET)) will present on "Thermal Degradation Pathways of Carbonate-Based Electrolytes at Lithium-Ion Battery Electrodes"

Thermal stress (>80 °C) initiates exothermic electrode–electrolyte reactions, causing self-heating and gas generation in lithium-ion batteries. Using in-situ and post-mortem analyses, we map key degradation pathways and mechanisms that can guide future strategies to increase battery stability and safety.

The GDCh Lunch Talks Electrochemistry are intended as a platform for the exchange of ideas between scientists. Each Lunch Talk usually consists of two short presentations of 20 minutes each, followed by a discussion. The event is held in English and participation is free of charge.
