A flash monitoring approach led to the direct observation of reactive intermediates in anionic polymerization. By using flow microreactors and in-line spectroscopic devices, the living ends of anionic polymerization could be analyzed by FTIR within milliseconds to seconds of their generation. Precise control of the reaction temperature and time revealed the stability of these reactive species, enabling an efficient block-copolymerization.
