<p>Chemistry represents the central science for the challenging developments of our future. To foster progress in terms of sustainability, the central role of advances in synthesis is emphasized. This comprises synthetic methodologies from molecular up to solid state chemistry including a detailed characterization of the new compounds and materials. These tasks afford joint contributions from all fields of chemistry. The Austrian Chemistry Days provide a lively forum for the communication in all areas of chemistry and chemical technologies. The program presents plenary lectures given by internationally recognized scientists, oral and poster presentations and time for discussion. Young chemists are particularly welcome to participate; a special program suitable for undergraduates will be additionally arranged.</p>
<p>In the past the Austrian Chemistry Days have been organized in cooperation with the chemical societies of Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. Members of these societies are particularly welcome to participate. In 2015 we are glad to share this meeting with the Italian Chemical Society. As in recent years, the language of the conference will be English.</p>

<p>Die Verleihung des von Bruker Austria gestifteten Preises in der Höhe von 1000,— Euro ist im Rahmen der Asac-Hauptversammlung in der zweiten Jahreshälfte 2015 vorgesehen.</p>
<p>Die Bewerbung um den Preis erfolgt durch Einreichung einer wissenschaftlichen Publikation bei der der Einreicher Erstautor ist und an einer Österreichischen Einrichtung innerhalb der letzten zwei Jahre entstanden ist. <p>Austria is a landlocked country offering very limited options to study marine natural products. However, cooperation with the Thai Prince of Songkla University in Hat Yai enables to investigate structures and properties of pharmaceutically interesting compounds from marine organisms.</p>


<p>Marine life forms are in an environment that offers entirely different conditions compared to those of terrestrial species. All body functions of marine species are thus adapted to the high density of surrounding water. Also defense and attack strategies are based on mechanisms optimized for these environmental conditions. In particular, organisms that cannot move themselves, such as sponges and tunicates, require highly specialized chemical defense mechanisms against predators. Chemical structures of the used natural products have been optimized during evolution resulting in compounds which show a high repellent activity even when highly diluted in the surrounding water. Thus, these compounds are potential lead structures for pharmaceutical applications.</p>


<h2>Cooperation between Austria and Thailand</h2>
<p>In particular, coastal waters in tropical climates provide a large biodiversity of marine organisms which had to develop effective defense strategies. Consequently, life forms in these areas are a rich source of marine natural products. Austria is, however, a landlocked country and located in a moderate warm temperate climate zone. These two conditions distinctly hinder local researcher getting direct access to such sources of marine natural products. However, Austrian Universities can be active in this research field having cooperation with research institutions in the coastal regions of tropical countries. Thereby joint projects with universities in Southeast Asian countries are most interesting. In particular, Thai research institutions have been active in studying marine natural products for many decades. This is mainly caused by the warm shallow seas surrounding the long coastline of this country.</p>
<p>It is quite convenient to organize cooperation between Austrian and Thai Universities due to help of the Asea-Uninet (see box). Hence, there are several collaborations between Thai Universities the University of Vienna. One of those joint projects with Prince of Songkla University in Hat Yai is focused on marine natural products (Figure 1). Hat Yai is the largest city in southern Thailand and has by far 200,000 inhabitants. It is located in the ca. 100 km wide isthmus between the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. At Prince of Songkla University study more than 36,000 students in 15 faculties. They are located on five campuses in Southern Thailand. The largest campus with more than half of the students is located in Hat Yai (Figure 2). The group of Anuchit Plubrukarn in Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences has key interests in structure elucidation of marine natural products as well as in studying structure-activity relationships of these compounds in pharmaceutical applications. Since the year 2011 this group has cooperation with group of Lothar Brecker in the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the University of Vienna.</p>


<h2>Isolation of marine natural products</h2>
<p>The studied marine creatures have their origin mostly in the Gulf of Thailand, where they are collected by the researchers in own dives (Figure 3). Samples of sponges and tunicates are collected at the depth ranging from 5 m to 20 m (Figure 4). Whereas the research frameworks on natural product chemistry between those from terrestrial plants and from marine organisms are quite similar, specimen collection of marine invertebrates on the other hand is a bit more challenging and adventurous. First, the underwater environment means physical limitation at every aspect, from limited air supply to low visibility and movability. It is therefore virtually difficult to make an accurate biological identification of the specimens directly at the site. Furthermore, the traditions knowledge based on the ethno-medicinal or ethno-pharmaceutical uses that support the selection rationale of medicinal plants cannot be applied to the marine organisms. Such cultural historical uses of marine organisms have been prohibited by the difficult access in water depths of more than 5 m or have not sufficiently been documented. For the practical proposes, the specimens are normally collected without detailed identification and the suitable samples are selected on the basis of biological activity screening performed afterward.</p>
<p>The collected samples are immediately preserved upon surfacing in ice-chest to protect them against rapid decomposition caused by the up to 40°C warm environment and impact of direct sunlight. After a quick transport to the laboratory, the samples are identified and authenticated. Selected samples that showed interesting activities are lyophilized and extracted. Analysis using chromatographic separation methods gives an overview about the distribution of characteristic ingredients in different samples, as common in isolation of natural products. A subsequent separation in the semi-preparative scale allows the isolation of individual substances in small quantities. Their molecular structures are determined by means of IR and NMR spectroscopy as well as of MS spectrometry.</p>


<h2>Structure and activity</h2>
<p>The molecular structures are one of the most fascinating aspects of marine natural products. They are highly diverse, and in most cases, are unprecedented among their terrestrial counterparts. Among the compounds that have been investigated throughout the Prince of Songkla University-University of Vienna partnership are trisoxazole macrolides from the kabiramide family. These compounds contain macrocyclic ring with a quite large number of different functionalities. Several derivatives of trisoxazole macrolides are present in the sponge <i>Pachastrissa nux</i> (Figure 5).<sup>1</sup> These rather complex secondary metabolites with actin-binding activity are likely used in the defense mechanisms against predators. Such an implication can be seen through the allocation of the toxic kabiramides between two distinct growth forms in each sponge colony; the more vulnerable protruding part accumulates significantly higher concentration of the macrolides whereas the sediment-covered base contains far less amount of such compounds. The karibamide trisoxazole macrolides also have some pharmaceutical importance, as they show a moderate antiplasmodial activity against the malaria parasite <i>Plasmodium falciparum</i> K1.</p>
<p>In contrast to these relatively highly functionalized macrocycles are oligocyclic terpenes, which have rather low functionalization. These carbocyclic compounds occur in different types of sponges and include steroid skeletons as well as tricyclic amphilectane diterpenoids.2a) Some natural products of the latter group bear the otherwise relatively infrequent occurring isonitrile functionality. Especially isonitrile diterpenes of the amphilectane family have been isolated among other structures from sponge <i>Stylissa cf. massa</i> (Figure 5). Despite — or just because of — their low solubility in water these compounds are very likely involved in the defense mechanisms of the sponges. Namely the isonitrile functionality provides a great potential to form co-ordinate bonds with metal ions in metalloproteins. Generating thus complexes sustainably disturb several body functions of predators. This particular property makes some of these isonitrile diterpenes also potential lead compounds in pharmaceutical research. They especially show very high antiplasmodial activity against the malaria parasite <i>Plasmodium falciparum</i> K1 which is based on a high tendency to form complexes with heme from hemoglobine.2b)</p>
<p>Anuchit Plubrukarn has earned a Master's degree at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok and his doctorate at the University of Hawaii. Today he is an Assoc.-Prof. at Prince of Songkla University and is engaged in studying marine natural products. <a href="mailto:anuchit.pl@psu.ac.th">anuchit.pl@psu.ac.th</a> Naphatson Chanthathamrongsiri has in 2014 completed her dissertation on the sponge ingredients of Stylissa cf. massa at Prince of Songkla University. In 2013 she was visiting scholar at the University of Vienna. <a href="mailto:chnanthaporn@hotmail.com">chnanthaporn@hotmail.com</a> Karl Husa is Ao-Prof. at the University of Vienna in the Department of Geography and Regional Research. <h2>ASEA-UNINET</h2>
<p>Asea-Uninet is a European-Southeast Asian University network, whose beginnings date back to the late 1970s and early 1980s, when the University of Innsbruck started to cooperate informally with several Thai Universities (Chulalongkorn University, Mahidol University, Kasetsart University, and the University of Chiang Mai). Officially Asea-Uninet was founded by Austria in 1994, at that time comprising 25 universities from Austria, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. At present (2014) Asea-Uninet already consists of 18 Austrian, 12 other European, and one Russian University as well as 43 Southeast Asian Universities, 18 of which are located in Thailand.</p>
<p>The main objective of the network is to initiate and promote cooperation between research institutions in Southeast Asian and European countries (Figure 6). In particular, it supports the exchange of knowledge between the partner universities and allows scientists and postgraduates to cooperate. Central focus is the ”Training and Mobility” concept that promotes the exchange of staff and students between Europe and Southeast Asia, especially supporting graduate programs (mainly Ph.D. studies), postgraduate education and specialized training courses. Another important objective is the implementation of joint research projects between European and Southeast Asian Universities in the focus areas.</p>
