Plastics Circularity for a resilient EuropePlastics circularity is essential for a resilient Europe. Over the past months, policy makers in China have accelerated the move towards plastic recycling to reduce emissions and to make China more independent from fossil fuel imports. The presentation explores how China promotes research and investments in plastic recycling technologies. Rather than promoting one specific recycling technology, China supports a combination of technologies. Most recent research findings support this approach: there is not one silver bullet among the plastic recycling technologies. Instead, their combination allows to maximize the plastic waste recycled and to minimize emissions. Dr. Hamprecht illustrates how BASF tackles the development of complementary plastic recycling technologies. The presentation highlights research needs and shortlists policy measures to speed up the transition to plastics circularity in Europe as well.Dr Jens Hamprecht, Vice President BASF SE, coordinates BASF's Global Plastics Steering Committee. In this role, he coordinates the BASF team that develops the company's strategy in the field of plastics recycling. From 2006 to 2017, Dr Hamprecht led a group of doctoral students at ETH Zurich in the field of circular economy. His research in the field of green transformation has been published in the Journal of Management Studies, Business & Society, Organisation & Environment, The Economist and Handelsblatt, among others. He completed his doctorate in sustainability management at the University of St. Gallen in cooperation with Nestlé Corporate Technologies, Vevey. He studied engineering at ETH Zurich and Imperial College London. Dr. Hamprecht is the managing director of PRLS, a non-profit organisation that coordinates the collection of plastic waste in Indonesia.
